Reflection: Community Service Feeding Program, continued

Reflection: Community Service Feeding Program, continued

Feeding program in Community service club waas not only once but we planned to go on every Monday. Plus, it was not the only one school that we went to. There were about two to three schools we went for our feeding program. I want to talk about the last elementary school we went to and how I felt about and learnt.

First, it was culture shock. The last elementary school we went to was such a different place. My school "Brent International School baguio" is located at Benguet, Baguio city. The elementary school was not so far from our school and it took only 15min by our school bus.

However, the place was full of small children with no desks, chairs and only one teacher. Plus, there was no other buildings for education but only the canopy. Under the canopy, there were 20 children with ragged clothes. I felt such a difference.

What I have learnt in this school for three years I have learnt about economy was the different level of economy at countries. This situation was just like the school I went to. The school not far from our school was in such a decline. Every children were so skinny and looked starved. I felt that in this small city, Baguio there could be such different places compare to our town.

I wished I could have other supporters to give out food and education for them. If I can get a chance to come to Philippines to help out children like in this school from my future school, I will not hesitate to come and participate.

Reflection: Feeding program (Community Service)

For 3 weeks, I have been to local elementary school. This school is full of young students who need help from others. The community services members decided to go for those students. What we have thought of was feeding program. This feeding programs were not what only we are doing but other schools in town.
They were also participating at the feeding program. The main purpose of this was to give children healthy food. From each schools they prepared food on different each day. Us, Brent school had to go there for every monday.

First Week: I got on the bus and whole community service members were heading to that school. I did not know there is such a place like there in or town. Unlike, the places I have seen, I could see the old buildings, people seemed tired and sick. The elementary school was located at the top of hill. This hill was very dangerous because it had narrow roads but with big trucks and cars. This surely can cause accidents around the school area. As we went into the school,  young kids were looking at us with strange eyes. But then they got used to us fast. We were playing with them and also preparing the dishes and cups for food. What I felt during this program is even though they are poor or need helps, they did not lose their smile and warm heart. They knew what they like to do. For only the time they were together with us, we could see the smile.

Second Week: We knew what should we had to do. WE divided us into two groups. One group for preparing feeding and other group for making children fun and quiet.  I was in the second group. I went to their school field where the ground was cement and has no grass around but cement block buildings. The children there love playing soccer. Fortunately in community service club, most of boys were in varsity soccer team. (also me) We decided to play soccer even though they did not even have goal posts.
However, I could see bare feet. Playing soccer on cement ground without shoes brings pain. I just wondered about the situation of students in this school. It was sad and made me to think again.

Third Week: This time, we did not prepared food but we went there to help the school to prepare the food. We were all busy by making children to be seated. I believe on this day, all of members were there and no one was absent. We all went to the field and tried to enjoy the time with children. Even girls from our school went out to have time with children. At that moment I just felt like the first time I came to this school. I could see those children smiling. Unlike my expectation about poor young children, they had big smiles and knew how to enjoy.

Somehow, I think this feeding program gave a chance to think again about myself compare to young children. Of course, I learnt how to feed and control young children and the way I had to behave as a older student. I noticed my life is already good enough for young children and thinking of myself complaining shamed me. If community service has another chance to go for a program like this I would not hesitate to be in that program.
